China’s Sinicization of Tibet: Record 10,500 Students Uprooted in 2025 Boarding School Drive
China’s push to reshape Tibetan identity hit a grim milestone in 2025. For the first time, 10,500 Tibetan students mostly bright kids aged 10 to 20 were sent to special “Tibet Classes” in mainland Chinese schools. This record number shows Beijing’s growing drive to Sinicize Tibet, erasing its unique culture through education.

These classes immerse students in Han Chinese language, history, and values. Free education lures poor families from farms, nomad lands, and borders. But experts call it cultural assimilation by force. Over 70% come from vulnerable groups, far from home.
A Rapid Surge in Numbers and Reach
In 2025, Shigatse City in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) announced the figures. Junior middle schools hosted 2,000 students in 150 classes. Senior middle schools took 4,500 in 205 classes 3,215 from TAR, 785 from Qinghai’s Amdo region. Vocational schools enrolled 4,000 in 223 classes. Total classes: 578, up sharply.
This beat plans and past years. Numbers grew 9.9% yearly since 2023. Now, 25,000 Tibetan students study in 120 schools across 23 provinces and 60 cities. Since 1984, 180,000 have passed through many returning as tools to “modernize” Tibet.
Roots in 1984: From “Aid” to Political Weapon
It started in 1984. China claimed Tibet’s education was “backward,” lacking skilled workers. They set up classes in 16 provinces like Beijing, Shanghai, Liaoning, and Guangdong. By 1996, a State Council document called it a “political responsibility.” It demanded strict organization for success.
The program exploded over 40 years. A 1992 rule stressed loyalty to the Party, fighting “Dalai Clique” influence. Today, it’s part of Xi Jinping’s Sinicization making Tibet “Chinese” in language, governance, and mind.
China says it fights religious “backwardness.” Dawa Tsering, ex-director of the Tibet Policy Institute (Central Tibetan Administration), warns: These top students get Sinicized, then spread it back home. Free costs hide the goal.
The Sinicization Machine: Boarding Schools as Cultural Erasers
These aren’t normal schools. Kids live in dorms, speak only Mandarin (Putonghua), study Han-centric history. Tibetan language fades; culture gets sidelined. UN experts alarmed in 2023: Around 1 million Tibetan kids separated from families, forced into assimilation.
Rural schools close, forcing boarding far away. Preschools now join 100,000 kids aged 4-6 affected. New York Times exposed abuses: physical harm, psychological damage, cultural Wipeout.
Human Rights Watch notes “bilingual” policy pressure: Schools switch to Chinese-medium, import Han teachers, train Tibetans in Mandarin provinces. Result? Tibetan-medium education vanishes.
Dawa Tsering says it’s deliberate: Target brightest to brainwash leaders. Over 70% from nomads/farmers cut family ties, implant loyalty.

Human Cost: Torn Families, Lost Identity
Imagine a 10-year-old nomad girl from Amdo, ripped from prayer wheels and yaks, into a Beijing dorm. No parents, no Tibetan festivals just Party songs and exams. UN calls it “mandatory large-scale programme” against rights standards.
Reports detail trauma: Emotional scars, abuse risks, identity loss. Emory Law review: 1 million in boarding schools, blocked from language/culture. Families coerced no alternatives.
Tibet Rights Collective: Education instills CCP loyalty, hatred for own roots. Punishments for speaking Tibetan; arrests for teachers/monks.
Exiles call it “cultural genocide.” Dalai Lama’s admin: Policies vanish Tibetan elements, control self-rule desires.
China’s Diplomacy: Pride Masking Coercion
Beijing boasts “aid to Tibet.” Xi’s visits highlight “progress” high enrolment as unity win. But it’s soft power abroad: Confucius Institutes push narrative, silence critics.
In India, near border, it stokes fears Sinicization eyes strategic Amdo/Kham. UN pleas ignored; China blocks probes. Global silence aids it.
This fits Uyghur/Hong Kong patterns: Education as control. 2025 record signals escalation under Trump-era US scrutiny? No Beijing doubles down.

Voices of Alarm: Exiles and Experts Speak Out
Dawa Tsering: “Brightest students Sinicized to Sinicize others.” ICT warns of “national unity” propaganda tours in schools.
UN: “Disturbed” by family separations. HRW: Mother-tongue access slashed. NYT: Widespread harm in preschools too.
Tibetan Review/Tibet Times track the numbers official boasts hide pain.

A Call to the World: Act Before It’s Too Late
10,500 in 2025 isn’t progress it’s erasure. Tibet’s soul Buddhism, language, nomad life fades as Han culture floods in. 180,000 alumni reshape society.
World must wake: Boycott Beijing’s lies. Press UN investigations. India, amplify border voices. US/EU, sanction enablers. Support exiles.
Tibetans resist quietly. But without global roar, Sinicization wins. Save a generation or lose a civilization. Time ticks; 2026 looms larger.
